The Prime Minister of Barbados, David Thompson, died on 23 October
after a seven-month battle with pancreatic cancer. His political life was
defined by one big event: the global financial crisis and economic slowdown. It
enabled his Democratic Labour Party (DLP) to end the bid by the Barbados Labour
Party (BLP) to win a fourth straight term in power in 2008, but it also
seriously limited the DLP's room for manoeuvre once it came to power. Barbados
remains the Latin American and Caribbean success story par excellence,
consistently topping league tables for human development, but preserving this
coveted status will be a big challenge for Thompson's successor, Freundel
Stuart, amid an adverse economic scenario. End of preview - This article contains approximately 987 words.
