HAITI: Elections in a time of cholera

Haiti is no stranger to natural disasters and their health-related consequences, but there was still a genuine state of shock when the country suffered its first outbreak of cholera in a century. As we go to press, 284 lives have been lost to the disease. The latest blow to Haiti's body politic puts into perspective the significance of elections on 28 November. And yet, despite this, the elections, even though they are likely to be imperfect, remain important, if only to restore a veneer of normality and to reassure wavering international donors that political stability will prevail in Haiti.
