VENEZUELA: Between CAN and Mercosur

In early September President Hugo Chávez announced his readiness to re-join the Andean Community of Nations (CAN). Chávez withdrew Venezuela from the group formed by Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in April last year, in response to Colombia's and Peru's decision to seek a free-trade agreement with the US. In July that year Venezuela was accepted as a member of Mercosur, the other South American customs union in which Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay are partners.
