PARAGUAY: Ruling makes Oviedo's release more likely

The convoluted course of politics within the ruling Colorado party took a new, turn on 23 July, when the supreme court lifted the preventive imprisonment order against former general Lino Oviedo in one of his pending criminal cases. This raises the possibility that Oviedo could be free in time to run for the presidency next year, which in turn has increased the turmoil in the ranks of the ruling party.
