Manoeuvring is underway ahead of the 6 November presidential run-off between Otto Pérez Molina of the main opposition Partido Patriota (PP) and Manuel Baldizón of the Libertad Democrática Renovada (Líder). The decision by the ruling Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE) to back Baldizón points to further polarisation ahead of the vote and a familiar urban/rural divide. The Compromiso, Renovación y Orden (Creo), of third-placed Eduardo Suger, is refusing to back either candidate, and there is uncertainty as to the impact of party leadership decisions at a local level.
