GUYANA-VENEZUELA: Maritime bid antagonises Chávez

Venezuela’s President Hugo Chávez has done more to improve relations with neighbouring Guyana than any of his predecessors since the former British colony won its independence in 1966. His reward? The government of Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo presented a petition to the UN to extend the country’s maritime borders by 150 nautical miles. The Chávez administration is understandably piqued but responded to the provocation with restraint.
