DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Medina and Mejía enter home straight

The starting gun sounded on 15 February for the presidential race on 20 May. Both candidates had long since left the starting gates, however, in defiance of the electoral authorities, and are really preparing for the final sprint now. Polls suggest that there is little between Danilo Medina, the candidate of the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) and former president Hipólito Mejía (2000-2004), of the main opposition Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), in terms of popular support. The PRD maintains, however, that there is a vast gulf between them in terms of financial support. It is accusing the government of President Leonel Fernández of throwing the whole weight of the state behind Medina and spending recklessly in a bid to secure his election.
