A plot to overthrow the Haitian government, allegedly involving a former Dominican colonel, has put a rather different slant on bilateral cooperation on the island of Hispaniola. Denounced last week by top officials from both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, it follows shortly after President Michel Martelly’s visit to the Dominican Republic - his first since taking office [WR-12-13]. It also comes as Martelly is facing political problems as a result of the resignation of Prime Minister Garry Conille and President Leonel Fernández’s Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) is gearing up for the 20 May presidential vote.
