In Brief - Colombia; Ecuador

SECURITY | Farc mass grave discovered in Caquetá. On 30 May, thanks to information provided by a former member of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc), members of the Colombian army’s Omega task force discovered a makeshift Farc cemetery in the rural locality of Cartagena del Chairá, in the southern department of Caquetá. Over the weekend (2-3 June), members of the prosecution’s forensic team confirmed the presence of human remains. According to the latest official count, eight bodies were found in five unmarked graves; however, authorities believe there could be hundreds of bodies. “The troops have discovered unmarked graves in the department of Caquetá, near the Caguán River. These graves are being dug up. The first reports tell us that they are numerous, over 100; we think there could be narco-terrorists who were assassinated, executed, and even civilians. There could be disappeared people and Farc guerrillas because it is their cemetery. But [there could] also [be] soldiers and hostages of whom we’ve had no news”, General Alejandro Navas, the commander of the Colombian armed forces, said during an event in Bogotá on 5 June.
