“Little can I say without knowing the details”, was the response of Police General Mauricio Santoyo Velsaco to the news that he had been charged by a US court for alleged collusion with the right-wing paramilitary group Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). The Colombian authorities, however, are bracing for an imminent international arrest warrant aimed at Santoyo’s extradition. President Juan Manuel Santos said: “I can’t make assumptions, but if they [US authorities] are requesting him it must be for a reason. The important thing is that he goes and answers, for the good of the institution [the national police] and the country”.
