First mining now oil. President Rafael Correa’s development agenda in Ecuador’s southern Amazon is again putting him into conflict with indigenous communities. Last March the government was at loggerheads with the indigenous over mining projects in this region, which, for the main, are still waiting to be finalised. Now he faces fresh protests over planned drilling for oil. Ironically, however, this could end up being the saving grace for the innovative environmental project Yasuní-ITT initiative – at least for now.
