Horacio Cartes won an emphatic victory in the primary elections of Paraguay’s main opposition party Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) on 9 December. The fact that his rival, Javier Zacarías Irún, conceded defeat quickly and pledged his support for Cartes means the ANR-PC is now the favourite to end its brief hiatus in opposition in next April’s presidential elections.
