In Brief- Ecuador

SECURITY | Ecuador’s army engages Colombian rebels again. On 10 April the armed forces of Ecuador announced that Colombian rebels fired a series of shots on an Ecuadorian helicopter that was in the process of landing. The event took place in the Palma Seca sector that lies 190 km northwest of Quito and there were no casualties or significant damages inflicted on the helicopter. The group of rebels fled from the scene and none were captured though Ecuadorian forces did find the makeshift camp where the rebels were taking shelter and found weapons and explosives. Towards the end of March a patrol vehicle encountered another group of rebels in the tropical forest region near the Ecuador – Colombia border, but there was no conflict.
