Peru’s most senior politicians set aside some serious differences this week to unite behind the government of President Ollanta Humala on the eve of the verdict of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague over Peru’s maritime dispute with Chile. Humala invited Peru’s political grandees to the presidential palace to discuss the imminent ruling. Both of Humala’s immediate predecessors - Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) and Alan García (1985-1990 and 2006-2011) - attended, despite the domestic political discordance caused by the congressional investigations they are facing into alleged corruption.
