HONDURAS: Candidates sign a national security pact

Seven Honduran presidential candidates have signed a document committing them to fighting the country’s astronomic murder rate, by far the highest in the hemisphere. Meanwhile, movement towards a ‘ceasefire’ between the two main street gangs is slow. The large deployment of troops in support of the police has not made much progress; new hopes are being pinned on two new élite units.
