COLOMBIA: Santos washes his hands of Petro

President Juan Manuel Santos will not intervene to save Gustavo Petro, the mayor of Bogotá who was dismissed by the inspector general, Alejandro Ordóñez, last week for his bungled attempt to nationalise refuse collection in the capital. Santos met all of the principal actors in the current institutional collision, which has drawn in the attorney general, Eduardo Montealegre, before outlining his position. Santos said he respected Petro’s decision, however, to turn to international bodies to assist with his defence. While Petro was appealing to the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights (IACHR) in Washington on 18 December, however, there was a dramatic new twist back in Colombia where the electoral authorities called a recall referendum on Petro to be staged within two months.
