The constitutional bar on President Rafael Correa seeking re-election indefinitely will shortly be lifted. During his state-of-the-nation address on 24 May Correa said that after “profound reflection” he had decided to seek approval from the national assembly for legislation to abolish term limits for all elected officials. Five days later the leadership of the ruling Alianza País (AP), unsurprisingly, resolved to back the proposal.
