Last month the Haitian government led by President Michel Martelly announced it had set the date of 26 October for elections to fill the ten seats in the 30-member senate which had been vacant since May 2012, as well as another third of the senate and the entire 99-member lower chamber, whose seats are up for re-election this year. The government also set 28 December as the date for municipal elections for hundreds of posts, including all of the country’s 140 mayors.
