HAITI: Election day set

Last month the Haitian government led by President Michel Martelly announced it had set the date of 26 October for elections to fill the ten seats in the 30-member senate which had been vacant since May 2012, as well as another third of the senate and the entire 99-member lower chamber, whose seats are up for re-election this year. The government also set 28 December as the date for municipal elections for hundreds of posts, including all of the country’s 140 mayors. Hopes that the prospect of elections, which were made possible thanks to the signing of ‘El Rancho’ accord between the legislature, the executive and political parties in March [RC-14-04] would ease the political tensions in the country have yet to materialise.
