POLITICS: Máximo Kirchner takes the stage

Though Máximo Kirchner, the son of President Cristina Fernández and her late husband, former president Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007), has long played a role in Argentine politics, until now it has been out of the spotlight. That changed on 13 September, when he addressed a rally of some 40,000 members of La Cámpora, the Kirchnerista youth group, at the Argentinos Juniors stadium in Buenos Aires. As well as confirming his intention to follow in his father’s footsteps by running for mayor of Rio Gallegos, a city in the southern province of Santa Cruz, Kirchner cemented his status as a rising star in his parents’ Frente para la Victoria (FPV) faction of the ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) by lashing out at the government’s critics.
