POLITICS & ELECTIONS: Entering the final stretch

With the 12 October general elections just weeks away, President Evo Morales appears set for another five-year term in office. The campaign period has been uneventful, underlining the opposition’s inability to offer any viable alternatives to the government’s poverty-reduction policies, which have ensured continued high approval ratings for the president. The ruling Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) appears less confident about the legislative contest, however, threatening ‘reprisals’ against party members and allies that cast a “crossed ballot” (voting for one party’s presidential candidate but for the legislative candidates of another).
