CHILE: Mapuche conflict flares up
Just as the government of President Michelle Bachelet is wrestling to contend with arbitrary anarchist bombings, it has been given a timely reminder that the long-running conflict with the Mapuche over land in the southern region of Araucanía is not going anywhere. No member of the government would have the temerity to suggest that there might be a link between the two, and indeed there is no evidence to make such a link, but the governor of the province of Arauco, Humberto Toro, did claim this week that there were “anarchists” among the Mapuche demonstrators who injured 14 carabineros (militarised police) trying to break up a roadblock in the area on 4 October.
