Venezuela’s Maduro placates military, pummels police and goes after street vendors

Development: On 30 October, at a military event in the central state of Miranda, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro defended a new 45% pay rise for the military, saying that he would defend the armed forces “above anything” and accusing the “ultra-right” and the “oligarchy” of having “contempt” for the institution.
