US congress delegation in Cuba

Argentina: On 18 February US White House spokesperson Josh Earnest said that the US was monitoring the situation in Argentina following the turmoil sparked by the death of Alberto Nisman, the special prosecutor investigating the 1994 Amia bombing case. In a press briefing, Earnest said that the White House was “concerned” over issues regarding the adherence to law and justice in Argentina, but he maintained that the US and Argentina retained a “strong relationship”. Earnest made the comments after Argentina’s Foreign Minister, Héctor Timerman, wrote to the US Secretary of State John Kerry on 17 February requesting that the US include a discussion on the Amia bombing investigation in its nuclear talks with Iran, which are currently under way. As reported in the Argentine daily Clarín, the US State department has since rejected the request on the grounds that the US-Iran talks are focusing exclusively on the Iranian nuclear programme and so any discussion related to the 1994 case would be inappropriate.
