The abandoned meatpacking plant located in the small city of Fray Bentos, the capital of the Uruguay’s western Río Negro department, has been declared a historic-cultural world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). According to an official Unesco statement, the plant - also known as ‘Frigorífico Anglo’- was given this status because of its importance to the world’s industrial history; “it illustrates the whole process of meat sourcing, processing, packing and dispatching […] on a global scale”. Uruguay’s tourism minister, Liliam Kechichián, hopes the designation will help to make Fray Bentos a tourist destination and promote Río Negro’s economic development.
