President Daniel Ortega’s ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) has named First Lady Rosario Murillo as Ortega’s vice presidential running mate, ahead of the 6 November general elections. The announcement regarding Murillo – who already plays an influential role in the current administration as the official government spokesperson – has been strongly criticised by Ortega’s detractors as yet another attempt to concentrate power in the hands of his family.
