The plans by the Colombian government led by President Juan Manuel Santos to give political legitimacy [RA-16-09] to the historic peace deal that it reached with the country’s main leftist guerrillas, the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc), have failed. The deal, the result of four years of negotiations, was rejected in a national referendum staged on 2 October. This means that, as it stands, the agreement cannot be implemented by the government and that the entire peace process is now in a state of limbo, with the government scrambling to find a way to salvage the process and avoid a return to open warfare with the Farc.
