Government takes over Electricaribe

After fruitless negotiations, the Colombian government has opted to take temporary control of Electrificadora del Caribe (Electricaribe), the troubled private firm in charge of electricity distribution in the country’s Caribbean region [RA-16-09]. The government has said that the unprecedented decision is designed to guarantee the provision of electricity in the area while it and the firm’s Spanish owner, Gas Natural Fenosa (GNF), come up with a reorganisation plan that will ensure that Electricaribe is able to fulfil its obligations to its customers and suppliers in the future.
