President Michelle Bachelet’s first term in office (2006-2010) was marked by optimism as she set about implementing some ambitious social and political reforms to shake up Chile’s social and political structure, but her second term has been marked by a reigning sense of stagnation. Bachelet’s promise to push through significant changes led to her re-election. But although during her re-election campaign Bachelet promised to ‘finish the job’ and deliver further reforms, her plans this time around have been scuppered by a slowing domestic economy, a series of natural disasters, and corruption scandals that have affected the business and political elite.
