NICARAGUA: Church calls for talk with armed groups

A spate of actions by military and police contingents against armed groups in the north of Nicaragua has led the Catholic hierarchy to take up claims of rights violations by the security forces and call for talks with the ‘rearmed’ groups which the government dismisses as gangs of criminals. These groups operate mainly in the north Atlantic region (RAAN) and Jinotega, along the border with Honduras.
