Paramilitaries gamble with rejection of peace process
The government has all but finalised its long-awaited Justice and Peace legislation, the legal framework for its peace process with the paramilitaries of the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC). The AUC has already rejected the legislation, prompting fears that it is about to end its demobilisation and return to arms. It is more likely, however, that the paramilitaries have played a highly successful bluff and have got everything they want from the proposed law.
