Ultra-nationalist militants rise up against Toledo
Peru's small southern municipality of Andahuaylas was the unexpected scene of a violent protest action on 1 January 2005 that ensured that this year will provide no more relief for the country's beleaguered president, Alejandro Toledo, than the previous one. An ultra-nationalist group seized a police station in Andahuaylas with the hope of triggering a national uprising that would sweep Toledo from power. The effort failed but only after six people had been killed. Further provincial unrest in 2005 is likely.
