VENEZUELA
The chances that the Venezuelan electorate will vote President Hugo Chávez out of office have become much slimmer as a result of the electoral authority's decision to demand that petitioners personally ratify about 1.2m suspect signatures. The opposition is already saying that it will not longer abide by any decision taken by the CNE, the national electoral council - which leaves it either having to attempt another coup or buckle down to work for an electoral victory in 2006.
