Venezuela's opposition splits after referendum defeat
The Venezuelan opposition, and its friends abroad, got it badly wrong. In the recall referendum held on 15 August, the vote went almost 6:4 in favour of President Hugo Chávez staying in office. Opposition insistence that there had been 'massive fraud' was swiftly disproven in an audit conducted under the watchful eye of the international observers of the OAS and the Carter Center. Only days later, the opposition began to split over what to do next.
