Humala seizes initiative but second round beckons
The presidential election campaign reaches its climax on 9 April with Ollanta Humala, the nationalist candidate, holding a narrow lead over Lourdes Flores, of the conservative coalition, Unidad Nacional. Humala's chances of emulating the late charge of Evo Morales to win the Bolivian elections in the first round look slim but this cannot be ruled out altogether. His support in rural areas of Peru is underrepresented in the polls.
