Venezuela-US diplomacy deteriorating further
In a move unprecedented between the two countries, Venezuela expelled a US naval attache for spying at the beginning of February and the US responded by kicking out a Venezuelan diplomat. This followed a month during which the US pressed Spain and Brazil to withdraw from contracts to supply Venezuela with military equipment; Venezuela announced its support for Iran's intentions to relaunch its nuclear programme; the new Caracas-funded Latin American news channel, Telesur, signed a cooperation agreement with al-Jazeera; and US Secretary of Defence Donald Rumsfeld compared President Hugo Chávez to Adolf Hitler.
