Evo wins in the first round
Evo Morales, the leader of coca growers in Chapare and the Movimiento al Socialismo, won the presidential elections on 18 December 2005. Initial indications were that he had won 51% of the massive (84.5% turnout) popular vote. The final figures showed that he won 53.7% of the vote and a majority in the lower house of congress. It is noticeable that since his victory Morales has toned down his anti-US statements: there has so far been no evidence that Morales is delivering on his promise, at his final pre-election rally, that a win for him would be a nightmare for the US.
