New president faces same old problems
Bolivia has a new president. Eduardo Rodríguez who, as the president of the supreme court, was the last in the line of succession, replaced Carlos Mesa on 9 June. Mesa's position had become increasingly untenable, with roadblocks bringing La Paz and El Alto to a virtual standstill and supplies of basic goods unable to get in. Rodríguez insisted that he would be no more than an interim president before general elections could be held. Organising these will be challenge enough but Rodríguez will also have to address the problems that beset Mesa during his brief tenure in power: the gas sector, the convening of a constituent assembly and the demands for autonomy from rightwing secessionists in Santa Cruz.
