Church mediation starts in Bolivia, but leftwingers unhappy
Bolivia’s bishops announced on 3 June that they had been invited to mediate in the political crisis caused by congress’s failure to sort out a constitutional schedule for the country. President Carlos Mesa's attempt, on 2 June, to lance the crisis by decreeing that two votes should take place on 16 October, one to pick members for a constituent assembly and the other a referendum on devolution, was rejected by the secessionists in the richer east of the country. The bishops are probably the last hope for finding a compromise that will avoid the country splitting up: the government has already rejected foreign mediation or that of the Organization of American States.
