Rise of Rosales checks Chávez’s complacency
Of the 28 candidates who have registered to run in Venezuela's presidential elections, to be held on 3 December, only two have a chance of winning. President Hugo Chávez, seeking his second six-year term in office, is far ahead of the pack, but Manuel Rosales, the governor of the oil-rich western state of Zulia, could still catch him, providing of course that the vote is fair. The mainstream opposition, with the notable exception of Acción Democrática which advocates abstention, appears to be rallying round his candidacy. Also worth mentioning is the comedian Benjamín Rausseo, better known as "El Conde del Guácharo", whose impact on the polls has yet to be determined but who could play a significant role.
