Challenges shape up for Lula's second half-term
The formal departure from Lula's ruling coalition of two important allies - the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) and the Partido Popular Socialista (PPS) - has marked an early switch of the country into major electoral mode. The leaderships of both parties said they were pulling out in order to field their own candidates in the presidential elections due in 2006. An as-yet unanswered question is how well-equipped these defections leave Lula to rule Brazil in the second half of his term, which starts in January.
