BRAZIL: PT upturn threatened by new scandal
In just under a month, the political prospects of the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) appeared to improve suddenly. A period which started with mass union-led protests ended with the polls showing an upswing in the government's approval rating, and a forward spurt by the PT candidate in the showpiece municipal contest in São Paulo. This so enthused party strategists that they announced, two years before the event, that President Lula da Silva will be standing for re-election in 2006. Lurking in the background, though, are other developments that could well reverse the PT's fortunes.
