Brazil & Southern Cone - 25 January 2005
The race for La Moneda begins in earnest
A year ago a Public Studies Center opinion poll, published in 'The Washington Times' on 15 January 2004, put JoaquÃn LavÃn, the presidential candidate for the rightwing coalition Alianza por Chile, far ahead of his leftwing rivals, Soledad Alvear and Michelle Bachelet. With little under a year to go to the December 2005 elections, LavÃn's campaign is stuttering, while those of the two women jockeying for the Concertación ticket continues to gather momentum. The victory of Alvear, on 15 January, in the Demócrata Cristiana (DC) primary, marks the beginning of a new phase in the campaign for president, in which the two leftwing candidates must attempt to establish their differences without exacerbating the divisions within the Concertación coalition.
