Kirchner's power not yet assured
The recent set of regional elections has offered President Néstor Kirchner two valuable opportunities. First, with well over half the population involved in the votes, he has been able to assess his popularity, which has been in question since he became president in May with just 22% of the vote. More importantly, though, they have presented Kirchner with an opportunity to build up his political support as he tries to cobble together an alliance that cuts across Argentina's party political system.
