Disappointing Bachelet victory gives Piñera hope for second round
Several months back a number of opinion polls were cautiously predicting Michelle Bachelet, the candidate of the ruling Concertación coalition, to win the presidential elections on 11 December in the first round. In the event she won just under 46% of the vote, meaning she faces a run-off against Sebastián Piñera, of the Alianza por Chile coalition, on 15 January. Interestingly, the results of the legislative elections means that despite the poor performance of the Partido Demócrata Cristiano (DC), the most recalcitrant of the four Concertación parties, it is likely to be a major powerbroker in parliament, regardless of the outcome of the second round.
