Cubas killing triggers political upheaval and shake up of security forces
The discovery of the body of Cecilia Cubas, daughter of a former Paraguayan president, on 16 February triggered the dismissal of the interior minister, Nelson Mora, and more than 50 senior members of the police force. In the ensuing efforts to find those responsible for the kidnapping and subsequent murder of Cubas, the public prosecutor turned up alleged links between a small leftist party, Patria Libre (PL), and the Farc guerrillas in Colombia. Investigations also exposed a seam of corruption running through the police force.
