Piñera joins Chile’s race for the presidency and Alvear quits
A presidential election promising little excitement was enlivened in May by the entry of a new candidate and the withdrawal of another. On 15 May the Renovación Nacional (RN) party, the junior partner in the rightwing opposition coalition, Alianza por Chile, decided to ignore the wishes of its partner, the Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI), and nominated Sebastián Piñera as its presidential candidate. Subsequent opinion polls, along with a perceived lack of support from her own party, convinced Soledad Alvear, the candidate of the left-of-centre Demócrata Cristiana, to throw in the towel on 24 May.
