Kirchner wins but no lower house majority
President Néstor Kirchner got the decisive victory he was looking for in the legislative elections on 23 October. For much of this year Kirchner has campaigned feverishly to ensure that the elections should be a successful "plebiscite" on his rule. His biggest gambits were challenging the dominance of former president Eduardo Duhalde in Buenos Aires and launching his own party, Frente para la Victoria (FPV), outside of the ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ). Duhalde was smashed and the FPV was the only party to carve out a strong national presence.
