PT leadership contest exposes divisions
On 18 September the ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) held its internal election to choose the party's new leadership. As most political analysts had forecasted, this was the most fiercely-fought leadership contest since the PT's creation in 1980. As an indication of the deepening divisions within the party, a run-off vote will be held on 9 October, since no candidate gained majority support in the first-round. This will be the first time the PT has had to choose its leaders in a runoff contest.
