Alemán gets 20 years after Sandinista pact spurs US intervention
It might yet prove to be premature to write a political obituary of Arnoldo Alemán but there is no doubt that ‘the Fat Man’ of Nicaraguan politics is facing the tightest squeeze of his chequered political career. Alemán, who served as President between 1997 and 2002, has been convicted to 20 years in prison on charges of fraud, misappropriation of public funds and embezzlement of at least US$10m - possibly spiralling up to US$100m - as well as criminal association and electoral violations. He is also forbidden from running for the presidency for the duration of his sentence although the appeals court could have the last word.
